RCS and iOS 18: New Horizons for Messaging Experience

On November 2023, Apple announced its plan to adopt RCS (Rich Communication Services) in 2024, generating excitement among tech enthusiasts and brand users. This integration promises to significantly enhance communication between iPhones and Android devices, offering a more seamless and modern experience.

During the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC24) on June 10, Apple revealed that its Messages app will support RCS in iOS 18. Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, highlighted the improvements that will come with the official release of iOS 18, scheduled for the second half of 2024.

What Changes Will RCS Bring for Users?

The introduction of RCS in iOS represents a significant evolution from traditional SMS. Currently, messages between iPhone and Android devices suffer from limitations: low-quality photos and videos, character restrictions, and a lack of interactive features. With iOS 18, this experience will improve dramatically, providing a more consistent and enhanced experience across platforms.

Apple has also updated its iOS 18 preview page, offering a glimpse of how RCS will work in the new system, further underscoring its commitment to this innovation.

RCS for Businesses: A New Era of A2P Communication

The real impact extends beyond regular messaging. Apple announced it will adopt Universal Profile 2.4 from the GSM Association, enabling RCS Business Messaging (RBM)—the enterprise version of the technology. This will allow companies to send A2P (Application-to-Person) messages with advanced features, such as:

•Complete, verified business profiles

•Real-time read confirmations

•Automated responses and interactive buttons

•Carousels with multiple options and quick action shortcuts

•Location sharing and wallet integrations

Although Apple has not provided an official timeline for the full RBM rollout, further details are expected soon.

An Unprecedented Opportunity for Growth
